Quantized Fields in a Nonlinear Dielectric Medium: A Microscopic Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
Theories which have been used to describe the quantized electromagnetic field interacting with a nonlinear dielectric medium are either phenomenological or derived by quantizing the macroscopic Maxwell equations. Here we take a different approach and derive a Hamiltonian describing interacting fields from from one which contains both field and matter degrees of freedom. The medium is modelled as a collection of two-level atoms, and these interact with the electromagnetic field. The atoms are grouped into effective spins and the the Holstein-Primakoff representation of the spin operators is used to expand them in inverse powers of the total spin. When the lowest order term of the interaction is combined with the free atomic and field Hamiltonians, a Hamiltonian describing a theory of noninteracting polaritons results. When higher order terms are expressed in terms of polariton operators standard nonlinear optical interactions emerge. These are then compared to the results of phenomenological and macroscopic theories. The theory is also used to derive an effective Hamiltonian describing counterpropagating modes in a nonlinear 2

Investigation of Charged Particles Radiation Moving in a Homogeneous Dispersive Medium (TECHNICAL NOTE)
In this work, we use Drude-Lorents model description to study the radiation of a charged particles moving in a homogeneous dispersive medium. A suitable quantized electromagnetic field for such medium is utilized to obtain proper equations for energy loss of the particle per unit length. The energy loss is separately calculated for transverse and longitudinal components of the filed operators. ...

We study linear and nonlinear optical properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium interacting with two quantized laser fields for adiabatic EIT case. We show that EIT medium exhibits normal dispersion. Kerr and higher order nonlinear refractive-index coefficients are also calculated in a completely analytical form. It is indicated that EIT medium exhibits giant resonantl...
متن کاملElectromagnetic field quantization in a linear dielectric medium
By modeling a dielectric medium with two independent reservoirs, i.e., electric and magnetic reservoirs, the electromagnetic field is quantized in a linear dielectric medium consistently. A Hamiltonian is proposed from which using the Heisenberg equations, not only the Maxwell equations but also the structural equations can be obtained. Using the Laplace transformation, the wave equation for th...

Interaction of the quantized electromagnetic field with atoms in the presence of dispersing and absorbing dielectric bodies Abstract A general theory of the interaction of the quantized electromagnetic field with atoms in the presence of dispersing and absorbing dielectric bodies of given Kramers–Kronig consistent permittivities is developed. It is based on a source-quantity representation of t...
